About me

Photo of me My name is Rusty Cawley.

As a writer and researcher, I have three primary interests:

  • Exploring the emerging dynamics between community outrage, risk communication and social media ... Outrage 2.0, for short.
  • Applying the strategies of risk communication to the everyday practice of public relations.
  • Advancing public relations as a profession.

I am Accredited in Public Relations (APR) by the Public Relations Society of America. I believe in Edward Bernays' original vision of the public relations counsel as an applied social scientist who helps clients identify and correct the conflicts that exist between every organization and its stakeholders.

I am a communications coordinator in the Division of Research and Graduate Studies at Texas A&M University, the nation's sixth largest university. I also serve as communications officer for the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Defense, a Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence.

Previously, I was vice president and director of media relations at Levenson & Hill in Dallas.

Before I entered public relations, I spent 20 years as a reporter, editor and publisher.
