The Message Map is a visual aid. It allows you to prepare and to organize answers to the questions you are most likely to hear from the news media and from the public during a crisis. It is based on research that looked into how people process information when they are under stress.
The message map is a tool designed by Dr. Vincent Covello, founder and director of the Center for Risk Communication. This module offers only the basics of how to create one. If you want details, download his brief guide to message mapping.
This presentation is a "Cliff's Notes" version of the presentation on message mapping designed and distributed by the National Center for Food Protection and Defense (NCFPD). It focuses on food safety/food defense crises, but a message map works equally well in just about any crisis communication situation.
